The Commercial Partnerships team consists of the Outsource Management and Procurement teams who ensure that the evaluation, selection, contractual and commercial arrangements, ongoing oversight and management of suppliers meet our policy and business requirements. The team also work to enhance the end to end lifecycle of managing our partners, providing procurement, governance and commercial expertise and leadership.

As the Assistant/Trainee Buyer you will be part of the Procurement team and you will support the sourcing & procurement activity, including the continuous development of the supplier category strategies for the Phoenix Group.

You will have a small portfolio of category spends to develop and negotiate deals that will drive value to Phoenix. You will be expected to develop relationships and influence stakeholders through your positive approach to building relationships. You will have the confidence to influence and engage effectively in order to deliver a great service and manage the supplier relationships to ensure delivery of objectives and required targets.

You will also have responsibility for things like:

  • our administrative processes to ensure that sourcing & procurement remain compliant to our policy and controls working in cross-functional teams, across Commercial Partnerships and the wider Operations function
  • developing productive relationships with colleagues from Finance and Legal and externally with suppliers
  • developing supply market expertise and business intelligence for the portfolio

What we are looking for:
You will have a business or finance related degree, or equivalent experience, and will have (or be working towards) your CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply) qualifications.

You will be working in a purchasing environment, ideally within a financial services or a highly regulated environment and be a strong resilient communicator. You will be able to demonstrate:

  • your technical knowledge of procurement and finance systems (eg: Oracle)
  • the ability to work under pressure in a fast-moving dynamic financial environment
  • proven influencing and negotiation skills
  • basic contract negotiation including implementation, amendments, extensions, disputes
  • your market knowledge and information sources
  • your commitment to continuous improvement in the role with an ability to identify problems and solutions with a desire to develop within the team
  • a demonstrable and ongoing commitment to ethical and sustainable procurement and supply
  • understanding risk management practices, clearly identifying risk mitigation actions
